HOW TO SELECT THE RIGHT BEARINGS (Connecting Rod Bearing) |
 |
1. Measure the OD of all connecting rod journals by use of a micrometer and log 1/1000 mm of measurement units
Example: SR20DET Connecting Rod OD 47.966 mm |
 |
2. Measure the ID of all connecting rod housing by use of
a dial gage and log 1/1000 mm of measurement units.
(Install the cap without the bearings and tight with a torque wrench)
Example: SR20DET Connecting Rod ID 51.008 mm
Calculation to determine the size of bearing.
If the target oil clearance is 0.030 mm, then:
51.008 mm - 47.966 mm = 3.042mm
3.042 mm - 0.03 mm = 3.012 mm
3.012 mm / 2 = 1.506 mm
(dividing by 2 to get one bearing thickness)
Go to product list to find the part #, this case 1101-MN222
1101-MN222 is applicable between 1.504mm to 1.508mm

HOW TO SELECT THE RIGHT BEARING THICKNESS (Crank Main Bearing) |
 |
1. Measure the OD of all crank main journals by use of a
micrometer and log 1/1000 mm of measurement units
Example: SR20DET crank main journal OD 54.970 mm |
 |
2. Measure the ID of all crank main housing by use of
a dial gage and log 1/1000 mm of measurement units.
(Install the cap without the bearings and tight with a torque wrench)
Example: SR20DET crank main housing ID 58.956 mm
Calculation to determine the size of bearing.
If the target oil clearance is 0.020 mm (SR20 main clearance is much smaller than the average) , then:
58.956 mm - 54.970 mm = 3.986 mm
3.986 mm - 0.020 mm = 3.966 mm
3.966 mm / 2 = 1.983 mm
Go to product list to find the part #, this case 1102-MN222
1102-MN222 is applicable between 1.981mm to 1.985mm

To confirm the selected bearing is proper size (Using Plasti Gage) |
 |
After installed the bearings, check with Plasti-Gage to confirm the desired oil clearance of both main and rod. The picture lower left SR20DET connecting rod shows it has a clearance of approximately 0.038mm a slightly larger than the target clearance of 0.030mm. This is due to the bearing's crush height effect. When the caps were installed and properly torqued, the amount of crush height create a tension on the bearings toward out side of the housing, resulting in enlarging the clearance. Some extreme case happens with RB26 engine's crank main, the crush height create as large as 0.020mm enlargement.

Depending on the type of engine, more of modern race engines builders are tend to have 0.02mm or larger oil clearance than the most high performance street engines for less frictional resistance, but the down side of this would causes more fatigue on the engine and creates noise and vibration. Power Enterprise F1 Black Metal can withstand far superior to this situation than any other bearings in the world and this is one of reason the F1 Black is the most popular bearing among WRC and GT fields.
Example: If an average of high performance street engine's oil clearance is 0.04mm (connecting rod) and 0.05mm (main), an average oil clearance of modern race engine often set as large as 0.05mm (connecting rod) and 0.06mm (main) or more for less frictional resistance.
